FACE/OFF
What's Up With Omillio Sparks

by Kate Kilpatrick

Real name: Kenneth Johnson

Age: 25

Hometown: West Philly (the Bottom).

Background: Omillio was one half of the Roc-A-Fella duo Oschino and Sparks and a lead member of the State Property family. He was co-writer/performer on Jay-Z's 2000 hit single "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)."

On the single: Sparks is currently pushing the first single "This Is the Life" from his upcoming album to be released this summer. "[Philly radio's] been blasting it off. JDS [of 100.3 the Beat] picked it up, then Power 99 embraced me."

The label: Sparks started his own label Colossal Entertainment earlier this year. His artist roster includes two young artists: Balboa and Bully. "I'm a boss now. My mindframe's different from when I was at the Roc [and] they was talking I was a loose canon."

On getting shelved: "I was at Roc-A-Fella since '99. I did a lot of writing-for both State Property albums, for Freeway's album, for Beans' B.Coming. But I never got a chance to put a single out. And then I was ready and focused, but at that time the Roc was going through their thing."

On acting: Sparks played Beanie Sigel's right-hand man Baby Boy in the State Property movie, and just finished filming Freeway's new movie What We Do Is Wrong to be released by Lion's Gate this summer. "It's similar to State Property, but different because Freeway's from North Philly. My character is real vicious and kidnaps their girlfriends and takes their money."

On State Property: "We talk. We see each other. We gonna handle some business together. When the Roc thing happened everyone was arguing, but it was business at the end of the day. There's no bad blood. But a lot of people didn't get a chance to come out."

On the album: "It shows growth and maturity and my little journey through this business. I think I handled it like a grown man."

Tell Philly: "That I'm here and I ain't going nowhere and I got them covered. I need to bring the platinum plaque home. I got y'all."

Coming soon: Omillio Sparks will perform at the launch party for his Colossal Entertainment label to be held at Haru (241 Chestnut St.) April 17.
