Kanye West & Busta Rhymes: "Love to Hate" Source:
"Yo, this beat is stupid right here, you hear the drums, man? Seriously." Poke me when Kanye spits on a non-Ye beat without first dome-clapping us with an ironic acknowledgement. Or is it just winking approval? Cynical schnooks like me might read it as a snide dig at Sparks, once they've finished smacking themselves trynna figure out why the clattering snares and kicks feel so, um, familiar. Back while dude's plastic still said Kane, Premier looped nigh-identical splashy keys & drums for Gang Starr on "B.Y.S." (from 1992's Daily Operation). Here Sparks scuffs up the skins grimy-- a bit more heavy, a bit more jangly than Premo's precision. Turning turntables, Sparks smartly drafts Kanye's playful "Brand New" verse to fit the mood ("And still the muh-fucka you love to hate/ But can't, because you love what I make"), injecting James Brown on ad-lib affirmation, line-for-line, before Bussa busts off his dungeon dragon shtick. Maybe familiarity does breed contempt, amongst producers. [Pete L'Official]
