Update: New Clues In Rapper's Stepfather Murder

Source: CBS

"I'm in the Philly Area so I'll try to checkout the word"
There are new clues unraveling in the murder of the stepfather of local rap star Beanie Sigel, whose burning body was found Tuesday in a West Oak Lane alley.

On Wednesday police located the car of the victim, Sam Derry, on the 1200 block of East Sydney Street.

In another bizarre twist, a good friend of the victim, Wallace Moody, was allegedly abducted at gunpoint from his home early Wednesday morning.

The apparent abduction of Moody, 39, occurred outside his home on the 6700 block of North 3rd Street in East Oak Lane.

Police said that two cars pulled up to Moody’s home around 5:40 a.m. and he was taken away in one of the cars.

A streaking handprint across the front of his car apparently indicates a struggle.

A destroyed cell phone was found near Moody’s car and it was still running. Police have since taken the car to be processed for evidence.

Authorities are trying to figure out if there is a link between the murder and the kidnapping of Moody.

“I can’t imagine what this can possibly be or has happened or anything like that,” said friend Heath Caudle, adding, “I’m just baffled.”

Officials responding to a brush fire on the 8100 block of Williams Avenue discovered the burning body of Sam Derry just after 4:00 a.m. Tuesday.

”I heard a big woosh. All of a sudden there was this fire,” stated resident Denise Calhoun, who soon realized what had happened, “I said ‘Oh my God – that’s not trash, that’s a body.’”

The Homicide Division is handling the case, but the circumstances surrounding Derry's death are unclear. Investigators say there were gunshot wounds on the body and believe Derry was murdered elsewhere and then brought to the scene.

"What I saw was something being dragged from either a van, SUV, Jeep, or something like that,” recalled Calhoun.

“We do have some unconfirmed reports at this point that there may have been a white van or white SUV in close proximity to the body at the time it was found," stated Inspector Bill Colarulo of the Philadelphia Police Department.

Police say it will take some time for the investigation because of the severity of the burns on the body.

Rapper Beanie Sigel, who recently made headlines after being acquitted for attempted murder, told reporters to stay away from his family Tuesday.

“Show somebody some respect. You all bringing cameras to where people live at,” stated Sigel, adding, “There ain’t no family spokesman, don’t nobody got no comment or nothing.”

Sigel’s defense attorney Fortunato Perri says the killing has no connection to the rap star.

“We have no inkling whatsoever that this has anything to do with Beanie Sigel and that Mr. Derry was involved in any improper activity at all,” commented Perri.

Police say that many times when a person is murdered, set on fire, and left in a suburban area, as in this incident, it is meant to leave a message.

As of yet, authorities have not determined a motive and there are currently no suspects in the brutal crime.

Police are asking anyone with information to call, 215-686-3353 or 215-686-3354 .
