looks like Jay-Z's artist signing spree isn't ending any time soon, as the Def Jam president plans to create a Def Jam Left label, where "artists aren't pressured by first-week SoundScan [sales]," according to now retired emcee.
When recently speaking with Billboard.com, Jay-Z said that he was looking to add The Roots as the first artist on Def Jam Left's roster, which may launch as early as the top of next year.
"I'm talking to the Roots right now," Jay-Z told Billboard.com. "I'm confident to put out there that we might make this happen. The label would probably begin at the top of the year."
Although, the label's launch isn't expected right away, Jay also said he hopes to have The Roots signed by the end of their international tour. The new label would be more about building an artists' popularity and buzz, rather than you typical label's approach of trying to gain chart topping sales the first week of an artist's release.
According to Billboard, the Roots' next album will be entitled Game Theory.
In addition to signing acts, Jay-Z is still struggling with being retired as a rapper. You have been hearing him a various guest spots since his announced retirement, something Jay-Z credits to the people.
"When people want something bad enough, it happens. And they want it bad (laughs). I'm trying to hold out, but I don't know how long I can," he says.
