Jay-Z To Start New Imprint?

Source:

Jay-Z has never been one to shy away from new ventures, and now he may even be creating a new imprint under the Def Jam umbrella. The Rapper/CEO/New Jersey Nets owner recently told Billboard that he's thinking about starting "an artist-driven label with very low deals so people are not pressured by first-week SoundScan [sales], so we can build artists." The imprint would be called Def Jam Left. Jay also noted that he would love to sign The Roots as the first act on the new label. "The label would probably begin at the top of the year, but I hope to have The Roots signed by the time they get off their international tour," said Jay.

And of course, since he appears as a guest star on so many other people's albums, Jay addressed the issue of his own musical retirement. "I'm still going in the studio, getting on remixes and things like that," he told Billboard. "But it's the people. When people want something bad enough, it happens. And they want it bad [laughs]. I'm trying to hold out, but I don't know how long I can."

Meanwhile, from the rumor mill file, U.K. Web site Ireland Online is reporting that Jay-Z may prefer to be known as Shawn Carter now. He reportedly issued invitations to an after-show party for London's GQ Awards on Tuesday, but would not sign them with his well-known Rap pseudonym. Ireland Online says that journalists were told to refer to Jay by his birth name in any article they may write, because "It's how he wants to be known now because he's exploring business opportunities in the U.K."
