The Spin | It's 'The Essence' of hip-hop Partying
Source: By Lloylita Prout For The Inquirer
It's going to be bananas...
It's the hottest new...
It's...
OK, so you've become skeptical of the hype surrounding most parties lately. But a Saturday night series, "The Essence," at Suite450 may warrant your attention.
"We thought we could give back by bringing great-caliber DJs," said Steve "Raze" Julien, president of www.allhiphop.com. And that does not translate into drafting the popular DJs of the moment.
"Certain DJs might not fit in... [or] encapsulate the essence of what hip-hop is about," Julien said.
So there are criteria that entertainers must meet, as well as an overall objective to bring "DJs that have never played Philly before," said "Grouchy" Greg Watkins, the Web site's founder. "The goal is to create a memorable party."
Or to return the hip-hop party to its roots, a task both agree is accomplished through the beat - hence the focus on DJs.
The July 30 debut of "The Essence" included the Infamous Mad Linx. On Saturday, Just Blaze will be at the helm with Scott Payne, and both Watkins and Julien intend to involve more local DJs.
Trust that these two know what they are doing. Both are behind the Web site that is all things hip-hop - news, reviews, interviews and gossip - and gets more than three million visitors a month.
With the two Delaware natives' breadth of hip-hop knowledge, "The Essence" won't lean to a particular sound in the genre, but will be all-encompassing.
You could hear "anything relevant to hip-hop culture, whether it's Lil' Jon and Usher or Big Daddy Kane," Watkins said.
"We're not coming out to compete with anyone or to make a gazillion dollars... . We like to do good things for the hip-hop community," Watkins said.
