Rapper Foxy Brown rejects assault plea deal

Source:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rapper Foxy Brown turned down a plea deal on Friday that would have kept her out of prison because she wants assault charges against her after a fight at a nail salon dropped to disorderly conduct.

Brown, who faces up to a year in prison if convicted on misdemeanor assault charges filed by two nail salon stylists, would have been required to perform 10 days community service instead of jail time under the plea deal.

Her lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, said Brown, whose real name is Inga Marchand, turned down the plea offer because she did not want misdemeanors on her record.

"Disorderly conduct is a different ball of wax," Tacopina said. "That's a violation and she would not have a record."

Brown, 25, was charged with attacking salon workers Myoung Yi and Sun Ji Song in and outside the chic Bloomie Nails salon in Manhattan last August over a dispute about payment for a $20 manicure the rapper said she never received.

Tacopina said the salon workers were trying to take advantage of her celebrity status to extract money from Brown, who arrived at court in a $200,000 silver Bentley.

The Manhattan criminal court judge set Sept. 22 as the next court appearance for Brown.

Her "Chyna Doll" album in 1999 debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 encompassing all styles of music -- the first female rap artist to accomplish that feat.
