Jay-Z Roc'd the mic as he hosted a lavish outdoor concert at John and Richmond Sts. last night.
By 7 p.m., ticketholders who'd shelled out $80 to attend Toronto's first T-Dot Take-over Bash rushed into the back lot and started jockeying for spots at centre stage.
The event -- part RocaWear fashion show and part Roc-a-Fella artist showcase -- drew between 2,000 and 4,000 people, Toronto Police estimated.
"If y'all don't lose your voice, y'all aren't doing your job," Jay-Z implored the audience as he took to the stage at 12:30 this morning.
Party-goers began queuing up at 5 p.m., wearing their RocaWear merchandise in allegiance to the platinum-selling rapper and businessman (he owns the clothing brand).
"All in all, I'd say I've spent $500 (on Jay-Z's products)," said University of Toronto student Jamie Lyon, 19.
"I'm here to see a living legend," said another fan, who gave his name as Maxamill.
"This man changes his surroundings from a rough environment and turns it into an empire."
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, also owns the Roc-a-Fella music label.
Performances from hot Roc-a-Fella label artists such as Kanye West, as well as emerging proteges Teairra Mari and Rihanna, were another attraction.
"All you have to do is look at that lineup and you don't have to ask why we're here," said Shiv Chopra, who came from Montreal.
"You can't have this Caribana festival without representing Canada," said local artist Glen Lewis, who was hosting Jay-Z in hisToronto visit. "He showed us a little love for his city, so we'll return the favour."
