Jay-Z was star struck at A Midsummer's Night's Magic Scholar Awards dinner, hosted by former L.A. Lakers star Magic Johnson at the Century Plaza Hotel on Wednesday. "These are my heroes," the rapper turned mogul said, motioning to the likes of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, boxing great Muhammad Ali and music impresario Quincy Jones. "I grew up watching all these guys. I'm the fan in the room" . . .
Jones revealed he's doing the score for 50 Cent's upcoming film debut, Get Rich or Die Tryin', the autobiographical tale being shot by Academy Award-nominated Irish director Jim Sheridan. "Jim Sheridan's great, and 50 loves him," Jones said. "The movie is jamming" . . .

Speaking of rappers turned actors, Ludacris said that the offers are flowing in, following his acclaimed performance in Crash and the upcoming Hustle and Flow. "It's all about picking the right parts and picking the right films," he said. "I'm real strategic." As for his first love, the rapper is working on his fifth album. "I'm always doing music" . . .

Xzibit, who cut his teeth in Eminem's 8 Mile, just finished filming The Gridiron Gang opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The movie is about a group of felons who form a football team and almost win a state championship. "It's a real inspirational story," Xzibit said. As for working with the Rock, Xzibit says the two have a lot in common: "We've been talking a lot about wrestling and hip-hop. It's very frightening" . . .

Later on at the Kodak Theater, where more musicians and athletes were mixing for the ESPY Awards, New England Patriots' wide receiver David Givens was plenty excited to see Destiny's Child perform. Why? "They played the Colts-Patriots game last year, and I saw them at the first Super Bowl I attended," he said, noting that the Pats won both games. "I hope they can bring some good luck tonight." Unfortunately, Beyonce and Co. let him down, as the Pats lost the Best Team award to their baseball counterparts the Red Sox. Yep, curse over . . .

At least one superstar athlete -- Dwayne Wade, who won the Male Breakthrough Athlete award -- counts himself a Jay-Z fan. However, Jigga might not approve of the Miami Heat guard's other fave. "Some days I'm gonna go with Jay-Z," Wade said. "Some days I'm gonna go with R. Kelly." I smell a tour! . . .

The night before the ESPYs, Fat Joe and Ciara performed at the Shaq-hosted Rollin'24 Deep: the GM All-Car Showdown, where celebs were "honored" for the most pimped-out cars. Macy Gray's 2004 black H2 Hummer won Best Exterior. Her secret? A brush guard, Healy spotlights and forty-inch tires. "Being in the car show was dope and meeting Shaq and Ciara was dope, but the best thing about the night was all of us raised money for our charities," said Gray, who donated her proceeds to her music school, the M. Gray Music Academy, opening this fall in North Hollywood . . .
