Bob Geldof, organizer of the huge Live Aid benefit concert twenty years ago, announced plans today for an even bigger event called Live-8. The event is being planned to coincide with the G-8 summit in Scotland, when representatives of the eight richest countries in the world will meet to discuss economic policy issues. One of the aims of the concert is to encourage G-8 member countries to do more to combat poverty.
The free concerts will take place on July 2 on stages in London, Paris, Rome, Berlin and Philadelphia. Huge screens will project the concert in other locations around the world for those who cannot attend one of the mainstages.
Headliners for the concert include: Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Keane, Joss Stone, Elton John, U2, Madonna, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, and The Cure.
