Jay-Z's debut left no 'Reasonable Doubt'--it was greatness

Date published: 12/2/2004

We always celebrate the "most successful" accomplishments the wrong way. Stop. Celebrate everything. And with that expressed, let's examine "Reasonable Doubt."

This was Jay-Z's debut album in 1996. This was not the album that sold the most copies. This did not create the bandwagon. This was just a great album.

Indeed, "Reasonable Doubt" reserves its own spot in my "Classic Rewind Material" music collection.

Forget the nicknames, rumors, beefs and clothing lines. Remember, this is the best Jay-Z you will hear.

Once the Scarface impression begins, you know it's a problem on "Can't Knock the Hustle."

Jay's witty wordplay and jazz-influenced production dominate the 15 tracks.

"Oh my," is all that needs to be said.

"Dead Presidents" and "Feelin' It" take you through those Brooklyn blocks with Manhattan penthouses around the corner. We see a transition from juice boxes to aged red wine on each track.

The Issac Hayes-sampled "Can I Live" is smoother, unopened Country Crock buckets. Jay tells his story through two verses that live forever in the mind of any listener. Especially when he swears: "I'd rather die enormous than live dormant/ That's how we on it."

One of the best duets is featured here, as well. Ever heard "Brooklyn's Finest"? If not, make up for that mistake by listening all day, all night. The Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z go back and forth over a Clark Kent piano loop.

DJ Premier also brings something monumental to "Reasonable Doubt." Check out "Bring It On," "Friend or Foe" and "Devils."

Jay-Z brings two new voices to rap with this album. Ever heard of Foxy Brown and Memphis Bleek? They are featured on "Ain't No" and "Coming of Age."

This album is great, along with any other praiseworthy adjectives.

The jury is in. "Reasonable Doubt" is guilty of committing too many classics. The sentence should be life in the stereo.
