JAY-Z MADE TO NIX FASHION LABEL

Rap mogul Jay-Z's Rocawear clothing company was forced to cancel the name of its spring fashion line after a rival accused it of stealing its "MUSE" trademark.
Maggy London International was not amused, and yesterday charged Urban Menswear/Rocawear with trademark infringement in Manhattan federal court.

Rocawear intended to call its 2005 spring line of clothes and jewelry "Rocawear MUSE."

The costs of the urban threads ranged from $35 to $250, according to an article in Women Wear's Daily listed as an exhibit in court papers.

Maggy London's MUSE has sold women's apparel and accessories under MUSE since 1999. And it asserts the name is a legal trademark.

But Rocawear spokeswoman Bridget Russo suggested the suit is moot because the firm is not using the name MUSE.

"We're not using the name. I don't think it's a big issue," she said.

She admitted the name MUSE was under consideration before complaints surfaced. But MUSE has not appeared on any Rocawear merchandise.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office also rejected Rocawear's request because of the "likelihood of confusion" with Maggy London's trademark.
