Jay-Z's Next Solo Act: A New Label
Is the writing on the wall for Roc-A-Fella Records? I hear Jay-Z (right) has inked a deal to set up his own label, independent of longtime business partner Damon Dash.
A source tells me Jay-Z is planning to call the new label Shawn Carter, his birth name.
When contacted this week, a close pal of the rapper confirmed the story.
The new label could shake up Roc-A-Fella, which boasts a roster of stars including Kanye West, Cam'ron and Beanie Sigel. Jay-Z and Dash have had a sometimes fractious relationship since founding the company in 1995.
Jay-Z, 34, has been concentrating on the new label since announcing his "retirement" this year. The rapper said the video for his hit single "99 Problems" would be his last.
