Jay-Z Tops 2004 MTV VMA Nominations
 Rapper Jay-Z leads the field for the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards with six nominations for the video for his single "99 Problems." OutKast, No Doubt and Beyoncé are right behind with five nods each.
This year's awards will mark a number of firsts, as the Aug. 29 event will take place not in New York or Los Angeles, but at Miami's AmericanAirlines Arena. The live broadcast will also not feature a host.
Among the first round of acts confirmed to perform are Usher, Kanye West, Jessica Simpson, Hoobastank, Yellowcard and Jet. MTV/MTV2 president Van Toffler tells Billboard that the event might boast the most expensive staging of any MTV Awards show yet.
"99 Problems" will battle OutKast's "Hey Ya!," D-12's "My Band," Britney Spears' "Toxic" and Usher's "Yeah!" featuring Lil' Jon and Ludacris for video of the year. Best group video nominees include No Doubt's "It's My Life," D-12's "My Band," Hoobastank's "The Reason," Maroon 5's "This Love" and Good Charlotte's "Hold On."
"Toxic "and "Yeah!" will battle for the best dance video trophy against the Black Eyed Peas "Hey Mama," Beyoncé's "Naughty Girl" and Missy Elliott's "I'm Really Hot." The best rock video award field features the Darkness' "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," Evanescence's "My Immortal," Hoobastank's "The Reason," Linkin Park's "Breaking the Habit" and Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?"
In another first, the Viewer's Choice award will be determined via head-to-head voting matchups on MTV.com, whittling down a field of 40 clips to five.
MTV2 viewers will select the winner of the MTV2 award, nominees for which are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps," Elephant Man's "Pon De River," Yellowcard's "Ocean Avenue," Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out," Modest Mouse's "Float On" and Twista's "Slow Jamz" featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx.
Last year's top winners were Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and Coldplay with three awards each. For a full list of nominees, visit MTV.com.
