40/40 Do The Bounce
Allegations that Jay-Z's nightclub is bouncing checks all over town are a bum rap, the hip-hop star's rep claimed yesterday.
Ron Berkowitz, spokesman for the rapper's 40/40 club, downplayed allegations the club, on West 25th Street, owes thousands to the contractors that built the hotspot.
The Web site TheSmokingGun.com first reported that two firms have sued the club, and a third was planning a suit because the 40/40 club failed to pay them for their work.
Berkowitz said one suit, by Ameribuild Construction Management for $8,114.59, was settled last week - and the second is without merit.
Berkowitz said the club placed a stop-payment order on a $5,400 down-payment check after Ronald Mark Associates couldn't deliver tables as promised before opening night in June. The club is countersuing to get its deposit back, he said.
Berkowitz said the club had not even heard a complaint from the third company allegedly planning to sue.
