Jay-Z Swan Song Gets Special Friday Release

Jay-Z's "The Black Album," which he says will be his final set, is to have a rare Friday release Nov. 28 from Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam.

"We wanted to try something different," says Def Jam/Def Soul president Kevin Liles. "Everything [related to the project] is black, so we figured, 'Why don't we put it out on Black Friday?' It's one of the biggest selling days of the year, and it's the day after Thanksgiving. So it's Jay's way of saying 'thank you' to fans for them giving him so much."

The album is being marketed with initiatives that include an all-black version of Jay-Z's limited-edition S. Carter sneakers by Reebok; the release of his autobiography, "The Black Book," from MTV Books; and a Clear Channel-produced tour that kicks off with a previously announced Nov. 25 show at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Jay-Z's initial concept for "The Black Album" was to have a different producer for each track. "I just wanted to have all those different flavors," he tells Billboard. "It was almost like a wish list of all the different people I wanted to work with before I go." He remains tight-lipped about which producers ended up working on the album, but industry buzz names past collaborators Timbaland, Kanye West, Just Blaze and the Neptunes as being involved in the project, as well as Lil Jon of Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz and 9th Wonder of Little Brother.

Jay-Z's last five studio albums debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. After the release of "The Black Album," he plans to turn his focus to developing new artists for his Roc-a-Fella label, expanding his two clothing lines, getting involved with movies and working with his philanthropic endeavors.
